The workshop was organized by SADC, FAO in collaboration with the University of Cape Town - UCT, the Swedish Chemical Agency – KemI and was funded by three FAO implemented programmes and these are European Commission programme on ‘Capacity Building related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries; the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund Project on Strengthening food safety controls and animal and plant health for increased trade in Southern Africa; as well as the Rotterdam Convention.
Workshop Objectives
The workshop objectives were:
- To elaborate a strategic action plan for SAPReF (2-5 years) to guide short and long term activities as well as to be used for resource mobilization;
- To provide some technical training to support implementation of the Rotterdam Convention;
- To strengthen regulatory capacity and promote better pesticide management policy and systems within Southern African countries through SAPReF members.
Target Audience
The workshop was attended by 53 participants that included pesticide regulators and Designated National Authorities (DNAs) for the Rotterdam Convention from 13 Southern African Development Community countries, collaborating partners such as University of Cape Town - UCT, the Swedish Chemical Agency – KemI. The Africa Institute (Regional Centre for the Basel and Stockholm Convention), IAPSC -the Inter African Phytosanitary Council, WHO, COMESA – the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the SADC Secretariat.
