Highlights: The Rotterdam Convention (RC) on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure (PIC) for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade is a legally binding multilateral environmental agreement, which entered into force in 2004. Panama has requested technical assistance to strengthen its capacity to implement the Rotterdam Convention, including via the establishment of a registration system for industrial chemicals. This need for technical assistance is being addressed through a project facilitated by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Secretariat) and implemented by Basel and Stockholm Conventions Regional Centres located in Panama (BCRC-SCRC Panama) in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Panama. The project falls under the umbrella of an EU-funded Global Public Goods and Challenges (GPGC) project ‘Implementation of activities approved by the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention’.

Workshop objectives: With the overarching objective strengthen the capacity of Panama to implement the Rotterdam Convention (RC), the workshop has the following specific objectives: Strengthen national stakeholders’ knowledge of the RC; and launch the development of an updated NAP and a registration system for industrial chemicals.
Target audience: The workshop will bring together participants from relevant government entities, the private sector, academia, civil society, and chemicals importers/users.
