Sub-regional Workshop to Strengthen Implementation of the Rotterdam Convention

Abuja, Nigeria, 14-16 May 2024

Highlights: The Rotterdam Convention (RC) on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure (PIC) for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade is a legally binding multilateral environmental agreement, which entered into force in 2004. Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and The Gambia are all Parties to the Rotterdam Convention. They have been identified among Parties in need of technical assistance in the context of the EU-funded Global Public Goods and Challenges project ‘Implementation of activities approved by the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention in 2019 for the biennium 2020-2021’.

Meeting objectives: The overarching objective of this workshop is to strengthen the capacities of the participating Parties to implement the Rotterdam Convention and to fully comply with its provisions, including the submission of missing import responses for chemicals listed in Annex III of the Convention.
Target audience: The primary target audience of the workshop are the Designated National Authorities and other relevant government representatives with a role in implementation of the Rotterdam Convention.
