Leveraging resources – Technical workshop on transboundary diseases and implementation of the Rotterdam Convention in Caucasus and Central Asia

Outcome

Ten Caucasian and Central Asian countries received information on the main obligations, opportunities and benefits of the Rotterdam Convention (RC) and increased their awareness. Two countries are informed on how to finalize and two countries on how to initiate the ratification process. Countries understand the benefit of sharing information and experiences regarding biological controls and biopesticides, the reduced risk that comes with it compared to the use of highly hazardous pesticides and the link to the RC. Parties also know how to request technical assistance and capacity building activities related to e.g. pesticide management. Further, all ten countries are informed about the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention, taking place from 29 April to 10 May 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland and the chemicals and pesticides to be discussed for listing during that COP-9. Information material of the Rotterdam Convention, in particular, the one available in Russian and adapted to the region, such as the visual facilitator’s guide “Protect children from pesticides!” has been distributed.
